Our Story

Then

Twenty five years ago two actors, Jenny Lee and Colin Haigh, found a disused ballroom in the upstairs of New Wimbledon Theatre and decided to turn it into a theatre. Attic Theatre Company was born and created numerous acclaimed and award winning shows.

A number of years later, Attic moved out of the theatre and became the company it is today – a touring company of national ambition rooted in our local area.

Now

Today we continue in the pioneering spirit of our founders – creating productions, workshops and creative events from our little office above Mitcham Library.

We aim to make theatre that is world class and reaches the widest possible audience through touring to both traditional and non-traditional performance spaces. You will as likely see us in a community centre, park or library as a theatre or arts centre.

We are passionate about engaging new audiences and this is at the centre of every project we develop. We take our inspiration from the old and new and work with leading theatre artists to bring these stories alive for everyone.

Enabling our local community to participate is central to our mission and we run a variety of programmes to inspire creativity across our borough.

We are a registered charity and are grateful for the support of Merton Council, Marcus Beale Architects and project funding from Arts Council England, Awards for All, the John Thaw Foundation, the Leathersellers Foundation, Cockayne and the London Community Foundation amongst others.
