Origins

Four new short plays bursting with the soul of Merton

written by artists who either live or work locally

Origins will see four short new plays, each roughly 10 minutes long which all originate from a connection to the human and physical landscape of the borough. These shorts are located and inspired by a place in Merton – a specific cafe, a park bench, a bus route etc. The writers will be examining issues that feel contemporary and urgent to Merton today. Overarchingly we want to celebrate the communities and physical landscape of our local area.

19 September – Mitcham Library – 6pm

20 September – Merton Arts Space, Wimbledon Library – 7pm

PAY WHAT YOU LIKE BUT BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL

The four writers are:

Rachael Black – Rachael is a playwright and facilitator. She has worked for Attic in the borough for over 7 years on our refugee and asylum seeking youth projects and has been writing for a number of years. This will be the first-time she has written for Attic.

Adam Hughes – Adam is a playwright and screenwriter from Leeds, of Polish and Ukrainian heritage living in nearby Sutton. He is under-commission to English Touring Theatre and Leeds Playhouse and is currently writing a second episode of SISTER BONIFACE MYSTERIES (BBC).

Conrad Murray –  Conrad is a theatre-maker, writer, director, actor, performer, rapper, beatboxer, live looper and singer. Raised in Mitcham, South-West London, he is passionate about making work through hip hop and beatbox theatre. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the BAC BEATBOX ACADEMY and theatre company BEATS & ELEMENTS. Conrad is also a former Trustee of Attic.

Daniel Ward – Daniel is an award winning writer and Merton resident. His debut play THE CANARY AND THE CROW won him the George Devine Award and Writers’ Guild Award for Best Play for Young Audiences. Daniel also wrote UNLOCKING CANONS HOUSE, Attic’s heritage production that celebrates the history of the newly restored Canons House in Mitcham.

The pieces are being commissioned by Attic Theatre Company and the Merton Library Service. This project will also be the first under new Attic Artistic Director Tom Bellerby who is committing the company to making work that is relevant to and inspired by the people and places of our home borough of Merton.
