Written by artists who either live or work locally
Diving into the heart of the borough with four new plays from the minds of some of the UK’s top writing talent, all inspired by the vibrant tapestry of Merton’s people and places.
These script-in-hand performances gave audiences the chance to see work in its freshest form – straight off the page. First launched in 2024, Origins returned to Merton in 2026 with another four short plays about the borough and what it’s like to live here.
2026:
Into The Rain – by Rachael Black and the young people from refugee backgrounds in Attic’s ‘Many Voices’ project
We Are Weeds – by Jonathan Holloway
London Road to the World – by Anastasia Osei Kuffour
Shards – by Kerry Wright
2024:
Wandle Park – by Rachael Black in collaboration with the Attic Conversation Club for female refugees and asylum seekers.
Mój Tata by Adam Hughes
Origins – by Conrad Murray
Origins by Daniel Ward
When and Where:
Origins has been performed in several Merton libraries throughout the borough, including Colliers Wood Library, Raynes Park Library, our home at Mitcham Library, and of course, Merton Arts Space at Wimbledon Library. Funded by Arts Council England and commissioned by the Merton Library Service, Origins demonstrates our commitment to creating and producing theatre in non-traditional spaces. Projects like these support our aim to increase opportunities for those who wouldn’t ordinarily engage with theatre to access high-quality, low-cost arts provision.
